Low Emission Zones (LEZ) in Belgium

Rules, maps, compliance, and registration requirements for Brussels, Antwerp, and Ghent.

To improve air quality, major Belgian cities have established Low Emission Zones (LEZs) where highly polluting vehicles are banned or subject to restrictions. If you are planning a trip to Brussels, Antwerp, or Ghent, you must verify your vehicle's compliance in advance to avoid steep fines.

What is a Low Emission Zone?

A Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is a designated area where the most polluting vehicles are prohibited from entering, or are subject to fee payments. These zones are monitored 24/7 by Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. There are no physical barriers or border controls; cameras automatically scan all incoming license plates and match them with vehicle databases.

⚠️ Important for Foreign Vehicles

All vehicles registered outside of Belgium (except Netherlands-registered vehicles in Flanders) MUST be registered online before entering any Belgian LEZ. Registration is completely free and is valid for several years. Driving a compliant foreign vehicle without registering will result in an administrative fine of €150 in Flanders and Brussels.
