Brussels Low Emission Zone (LEZ) Guide

Detailed rules, boundary map, exceptions, and registration for the Brussels region.

📍 Zone Scope & Boundaries

The Brussels LEZ covers the entire Brussels-Capital Region, which includes all 19 municipalities (such as Brussels City, Ixelles, Saint-Gilles, Uccle, etc.). The zone is active 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including Sundays and holidays.

Exception: The Ring R0 (outer ring road) is NOT part of the LEZ. Certain access roads to transition P+R car parks (like P+R Ceria/Coovi next to the ring road) are also exempt, allowing you to park and ride the metro without entering the zone with your vehicle.

🚗 Allowed & Banned Vehicles (2026 Rules)

Low emission standards in Brussels have tightened starting January 1, 2026. Access criteria depend on the vehicle category (M1 passenger, N1 light goods) and its Euro standard:

  • Petrol / LPG / CNG: Euro 3 or higher are allowed (Euro 2 and lower are banned).
  • Diesel: Euro 6 or higher are allowed (Euro 5 and lower are banned).
  • Electric & Hydrogen: Always allowed with no restrictions.

🔗 Official Registration Portal

All vehicles registered outside of Belgium (except Netherlands-registered vehicles in Flanders) must be registered. Brussels registration is free and done only via:

🌍 How to Register a Foreign Plate for Brussels

  • Verify Compliance: Ensure your vehicle meets the Euro 3 (petrol) or Euro 6 (diesel) standard to avoid day pass requirements.
  • Prepare Documents: Have your vehicle registration certificate (e.g. UK V5C or European equivalent) in PDF or image format.
  • Submit Details: Fill out the vehicle details, Euro standard, and upload your document on the lez.brussels portal.
  • Await Confirmation: Submit. Registration is free and processed within 24-48 hours. Keep the confirmation email.

💸 Fines & Enforcement

Enforcement is automated via ANPR cameras placed throughout the region. The fine for entering the Brussels LEZ with a non-compliant vehicle is €350. You can only receive one fine per day per vehicle. If you enter with a compliant foreign vehicle but failed to register it, you can be fined €150.

🎟️ LEZ Day Pass

If your vehicle is not allowed, you can purchase a day pass online for €35. You can purchase a maximum of 24 day passes per vehicle per calendar year. The day pass must be bought before entering the zone or, at the latest, on the day of entry.

⚖️ Contesting or Appealing a Brussels LEZ Fine

If you receive a €350 fine, you have 30 days to submit a formal appeal to Brussels Fiscality. You can contest if your vehicle was registered correctly, falls under exemptions, or if you purchased a day pass for the entry day. Supporting evidence like your registration certificate is required.

🚀 Upcoming Low Emission Zones in Belgium

While Brussels, Antwerp, and Ghent are the main active zones, other cities (such as Leuven, Mechelen, and Liège) are preparing legislative frameworks to introduce geofenced zones or emission restrictions. Check official updates before traveling.
